She was a patron of the arts and supported many organizations, including the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre. Rebekah was married three times. Her first marriage was to John Hay Whitney, a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Her second marriage was to William Hale Harkness, a wealthy oilman. Her third marriage was to John D. Rockefeller III. Rebekah was a generous philanthropist and donated millions of dollars to various causes. She established the Harkness Foundation for Dance, which provides grants to dance companies and organizations. She also established the Harkness Ballet, which was the first professional ballet company in the United States. Rebekah Harkness died on December 18, 1982, in New York City. She was 67 years old.
